Cervantes, for example, wrote a novel about Christian slaves and included a chapter in Don Quixote about freeing slaves......

"Vandalized but not removed was a statue of Miguel de Cervantes, a Spanish writer who was himself a slave for five years. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza — and for what?” asked a frustrated Howard, watching the graffiti removal from John F. Kennedy Drive. “It’s very sad. It makes me feel it’s totally out of hand and it has nothing to do with civil rights.”....https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2020/06/20/mayor-breed-destruction-statues-golden-gate-park-vandalism/

Ulysses S. Grant, who won the civil war for Lincoln, was from Missouri, which was entered into the US as a "slave" state (Missouri Compromise). Evidently Grant owned one slave.
"Grant personally owned one slave, William Jones, given to him in 1857 by his father-in-law and manumitted by Grant on  March 29,1859.[3]

Does anyone know what MANUMITTED means?   Grant's slave was manumitted two years after his father-in-law gifted him. So he was a slave owner for two years, whereupon he freed the slave.
One can only conclude the anger is not about slavery.
